Palm Vaults Café, Mare Street, Hackney I work from home a couple of days a week and whilst I love being at home (I am definitely a home bird), I do like having the option for a change of scene – and Palm Vaults is a beautiful change of scene.
Living in Hackney, we aren’t short of the exposed brick, urban-type rustic cafés where the top knot crew can hang out with their lattes and macs. But for me, a lot of those cafés aren’t colourful enough and I don’t feel like I belong. I find colour inspiring so sitting in café where the palette appeals to me helps to get the creative juices flowing. So, when I saw Palm Vaults pop up on our local high street, which is currently home to more chains (M& S, Primark and Clarks!) than cool hangout spots, I felt drawn to the pastel pink and mint green front.
Like with many new in London, it has taken me awhile to actually find the time to go there but now that I have, it is definitely one of my favourite places. The staff are friendly and chilled, and the music playing isn’t too loud which helps create the perfect atmosphere for a working environment or a much-needed catch-up with friends.
With rows of hanging plants coming down from the ceiling and precariously placed air plants in glass bowls, this place is for plant lovers and definitely appeals to the jungle girl in me! The attention to detail is insane, with even the straws matching the décor. I like the owner’s style. I’m now thinking Sew Over It doesn’t have enough coordinated stuff!
There are also some pretty cool coffee table books there, which if nothing else, look pretty. I was loving this one on sharks! Random but so cool and retro. And the cover was pink so I had to pick that up.
I’m not a coffee drinker so I can’t comment on the lattes but let’s face it, they’re a bit boring anyway. However, I can comment on the amazing selection of cakes. I have a massive sweet tooth and could easily eat cake every day. So when faced with a selection of five cakes, it was hard to choose. My current favourite is their vegan Spiced Orange Cake (the Avocado Fudge Cake is also on my list – one of your daily five, right?!). It was delicious, tasty and moist, and just how a cake should be. I gobbled it up in 5 minutes. Yum.
Besides drink, Palm Vaults also offers some interesting toasties – yet to try. I like the sound of the “Vice City” with its bechamel, cheddar, gouda, spring onion and chives. You can tell I am writing this post on a cold winter’s day with an urge for carbs and melted cheese! Or a simpler “You’re So Cool” cheddar and red onion marmalade. You can also get a brioche: Peanut Butter Jelly Time – does what it says on the tin. The perfect comfort food for this time of year. Will be interesting to see what the summer menu is like. I shall report back!
