I am always asking people what they are watching on Netflix at the moment and what podcasts they are listening to. I think it is one of the most common water cooler conversation topics. So in case you were wondering – these are my favourite podcasts at the moment and I think they round me up pretty well: business, mum life and sewing!
“Guy Raz dives into the stories behind some of the world’s best known companies. How I Built This weaves a narrative journey about innovators, entrepreneurs and idealists—and the movements they built.”
How I Built This is definitely my favourite podcast at the moment. I have listened to pretty much all of the episodes. My favourites were: Spanx, Ben & Jerry’s and Instagram. For any entrepreneur or person interested in business these stories are fascinating. What I love most about it is all of them got to a stage where it seemed their business was about to fail but then they picked themselves up and got on with it – they have grit. For me I find that reassuring – that you can be a super successful business but somewhere along the line you made a mistake or you hit real trouble and yet you still made it.
“StartUp is a documentary series about entrepreneurial life. The show has been downloaded tens of millions of times since its launch in 2014. Its first season has been adapted into an ABC sitcom called Alex, Inc. starring Zach Braff. StartUp has won a Gracie Award and the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.”
Start Up is a similar podcast but the first couple of series it focuses on one business per series. This means it gets into a lot more detail. The first series is particularly interesting as it is the Gimlet media story – the guys who do this podcast.
“Helen Wilkinson and Caroline Somos host Love to Sew, a fun weekly podcast about making clothes, sewing community, and small business. They talk (and laugh) about their passion for sewing a handmade wardrobe and their daily lives as creative entrepreneurs.”
Love to Sew is the podcast for those of you who love to sew. Caroline and Helen are interesting and interested and manage to always bring out the best stories in their guests. You should definitely listen to their podcast about fabrics – you will learn a lot!
“Eight tracks, a book and a luxury: what would you take to a desert island? Kirsty Young invites her guests to share the soundtrack of their lives”
Desert Island Discs is something I grew up listening to on car journeys and I still do. It is my go-to podcast to pepper in between the others. When I feel I need a break from them I always find the purr of Kirsty Young’s voice soothes me. Some of the best episodes are with the least known guests.
“The Scummy Mummies comedy duo host a fortnightly chat show for less-than-perfect parents and perform live shows around the UK.”
I need a podcast that makes me laugh and this one does exactly that. Only really funny for parents, these two women are hilarious. I cannot wait to go see them live one day. A must listen for mums wanting to feel comforted by the chaos, tediousness and delight in being a parent.
